The Monster console
Les Paul’s “Monster” console was a custom-built recording desk engineered to give him unprecedented control over sound. Featuring modified electronics and innovative routing options, it allowed Les to experiment with complex signal chains long before modern consoles existed. Its flexibility and power made it a cornerstone of his groundbreaking studio workflow.
Les Paul Arcturus Record-Cutting Lathe
Les Paul’s Arcturus record-cutting lathe was the tool he used to create his early overdub experiments, manually layering performances by cutting directly to disc. This process required exceptional accuracy and creativity, and the lathe became a key part of his pioneering work in sound-on-sound recording. It remains an important artifact of the era when overdubbing was invented.
The Octopus - Ampex 8-track
Nicknamed the “Octopus,” Les Paul’s 8-track machine was the world’s first functional multitrack recorder. Built in collaboration with Ampex, it allowed him to record, layer, and perfect performances with a level of precision that revolutionized studio production. The Octopus became the foundation of modern multitrack recording and cemented Les Paul’s legacy as an audio innovator.
Les Paul’s vintage RCA 44 ribbon microphone
This iconic mic—famous for its warm, velvety tone and legendary presence on countless classic recordings—is fully restored and available for use during studio sessions. A true piece of audio history, it offers artists the rare opportunity to capture performances through the same technology favored by Les himself and many of the greatest engineers of the 20th century.
